Jeff Chen is the Chief Innovation Officer of the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) where he leads machine learning research and alternative data. A statistician and data science executive, he has led data initiatives in over 35 domains, working with stakeholders such as firefighters, climatologists, technologists. Prior to BEA, he was the Chief Data Scientist and Deputy Chief Data Officer of the U.S. Department of Commerce, a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow with NASA and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy focused on data science for environmental issues; served as the first Director of Analytics at the NYC Fire Department where he engineered algorithms for fire prediction; and was among the first data scientists at the NYC Mayor's Office under then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Jeff started his career as an econometrician at an international engineering consultancy where he was a super fan of BEA’s data products. In the evenings, he is an adjunct professor of data science at Georgetown University, serves as as an advisor to a promising ML startup, and generates soccer analytics insights for a Major League Soccer team.
